This novel has an exotic aspect that makes it particularly compelling. The main character, Benjamin, finds himself marooned on a deserted island with a strange and attractive savage who takes a man and nurses him to health. They wander the island together for some time and quickly fall in love. It is then that pirates land, who want to take the savage’s hidden treasure. Both Benjamin and the savage are forced to board the other ship, where Benjamin learns about the savage’s past as a slave, and they must choose between their own idyllic Eden and a forced peace with the Pirates. How the two men manage their disparate societies and yet keep their own love is a fascinating tale.
