Review written by Christopher Hawthorne Moss
This one is a little different from the usual Dee and Devon gay love pairing. Quite a bit less lighthearted, it involves the son of a Germanic count traveling in England as part of his diplomatic duties, who is being touched over by a British spy. Karl is traveling with an entourage and does not at first realize that the man injecting himself is a British operative. When attempts are made on the count’s son’s life, Jonathan, the spy, reveals himself in order to protect him.
Both men have had to hide their more passionate side as lovers of men. But neither is immune when the two become intimate. Jonathan finds Karl’s free spirit and light heart tremendously appealing. For his part, Karl is drawn to Jonathan’s protective devotion to himself. Of course, the point of the story is that Jonathan starts to suspect Karl’s entourage of being the would-be assassins. At first Karl is offended by his suspicion, but he cannot avoid reading the writing on the wall.
