I came into this novel one book late to find Lord Crane and Stephen Day already connected and in London on the hunt of a blackmailer and a race of giant rats that can only be controlled with the use of Justifiers and their magic.  You certainly get to know an intriguing cast of characters in the Justifiers and to find out what happens when a Justifier and the Magpie Lord share blood!  What you learn about Londoners who lived in Shanghai and what the straight world think about the gay will keep you involved no doubt throughout this entire series.
