Research for “Waiting for Patrick”

I love research.

Any time I start writing, I usually start with a subject I know, but there always seems to be something I need to research for each book, no matter how much I know about the general topic.

In What No One Else Can Hear, I needed to research a bunch of legal questions. I knew about Autism from working with kids on the spectrum over thirty years of teaching. I was also familiar with residential facilities for children with Autism as I volunteered at one for years. And, of course, I had a general idea of how the legal system works. But I needed to research specifics.

In Ray of Sunlight, and Through the Years, I researched various kinds of cancer to add to my personal knowledge. In For Mac, I needed more in depth knowledge of the inner workings of rehabilitation centers. In Living Again, it was intricate knowledge of amputations I needed find out.

So, of course I figured I’d be doing some research for Waiting for Patrick. I didn’t think it would take nearly as much as it did, however, because I thought I knew a lot about the Civil War. I live in the south now and it’s all around me. But I didn’t know enough of what I needed to know for the book. I had to look up what daily speech was like in the mid-1800s. What slang would Ben and Patrick likely use (and there was a definite difference in slang used in Pennsylvania versus that used farther west, or south.) I had to find out what the (then) current view on ghosts had been. What were their clothes like? How did the uniforms fasten? When did the different armies institute the draft? How were pictures taken at the time, and how expensive might they have been? What did bathing suits look like and what were they called? Weird things I hadn’t thought I’d need to know when I first started writing the story, but all very interesting. I loved every minute perusing the extensive list of articles and lists needed to make this story come to life.

Commenters: Do you like to research? Are you a Google Queen (or King)? Or do you use other sources? Comment below for a chance to win.

Architect Elliot Graham has bought and restored dozens of historic homes to their original splendor. As in his personal life, he loves them and leaves them, selling them off without looking back. But there’s something about the old plantation house he finds in South Carolina—a connection he can’t explain. He feels as though he recognizes the house, as if within its crumbling walls he might find something he doesn’t even realize he’s lost.

Ben Myers had promised his lover and soul mate, Patrick, that he would wait for his return. Ben has kept his word ever since Patrick left him to wait at the plantation house—during the Civil War. For the first time in many long years, Ben is no longer alone, and he reaches out to Elliot in dreams. Elliot tries to convince Ben that Patrick isn’t coming back, but Ben’s devotion is about to change not only his lonely existence, but Elliot’s life as well.

About the Author

Brynn has always loved to write about strong male characters and their close friendships. When she found the world of m/m fiction, she fell in love. Finally, a way to bring those strong male characters together and let those emotional connections spill over into deeper relationships. Sometimes her characters go through the emotional wringer, but they always have each other.

Brynn lives in Virginia near her two grown daughters who support her writing and sometimes act as proof readers. Both of her daughters are also aspiring writers and hopefully it’ll just be a matter of time before they have their own author’s biography.

Brynn was a teacher by profession for thirty years. She worked in special education with children with emotional disabilities. She has recently changed careers and is now working as a mental health counselor to this same population and their families. When she is not working or writing, she loves to draw and paint. She also gets outside as often as she can, reads anything that doesn’t move out of the way, and is always looking for her next story.
